Greek Cosplay Wishes 2013

Posted in Errata, Events with tags , , , , , , , on December 29, 2013 by speedxgrapher

It has been literally years since I last posted anything here. There were a few ideas, still less time and procrastination of epic proportions. Recently (that is to say, over the last year, or even two years), the concentrated efforts of Cassiel, an otaku I consider among “The Old Guard”, based in Greece’s Katerini and Salonika, have prompted me to reexamine a scene I left under considerably bad terms (those who know, know – for the rest, let us just say I could crunch a sopa opera book series out of the events of that time).

At any rate, repeated contact with new (and some seasoned) cosplayers over the course of Comicdom Con, meeting the great people behind Greek Otaku Radio, as well as the aforementioned activities and some discussions with Cassiel, I am considering whether there is a point in reviving this blog. The jury’s still out yet, but as a token of respect for Cass’s work, I will share with you a video he made, encompassing wishes for the coming year from cosplayers and people involved in the scene in other ways.

If you watch it all the way through, you will also see me, in a photo from much happier times (The Maid Cafe at the Athens Mall fnac in 2009 – the fnac has since become a Public, but in the photos you can also see Cassiel cosplaying as one of our shared favorite characters, Captain Harlock), accompanied with a text I sent for the video, since I could not get a camera to record my message in time. Now, all the video is in Greek, but you still get to see many cosplays and much Christmas  lunacy.

It has been a hard year (hard 3-4 years, come to think of it) for most people in Greece. Let us hope this year treats us better and sees this rotten government fall.

Peace,

Speedgrapher

Oni Market #23: Cosplayers & J-fans @ Comicdom Con Athens 2010

Posted in Events, Oni Market with tags , , , , , , , on April 29, 2010 by speedxgrapher

Hello again dear readers. It’s time for some glorified voyeursim yet again– err, I meant a new photo gallery containing cosplays and featuring some friends from the J-Events. I shall not tarry with pointless chit-chat and will just say two things: first, CHORISSU is on its way to Salonika as we speak and soon I will have more news as to where you can get it, both there and in Athens and second, I would like to congratulate Helen Trigatzi for her Silk Spectre depiction, as well a thank her for putting some of my photos up on her very interesting Deviant Art page. Go and have a look – you will be amazed!

That said, we can move on to the photos. Note that they are an assortment from all three days.

Well, that was it – I did warn you they were just a small assortment, but fun all the same I suppose.

See you around,

Speedgrapher

P.S. [WordPress can go fuck itself because it lost my captions once more. I am too bored and busy to rewrite them. Gomen…] I did rewrite them after all.

Oni Market #22: Chorissu @ Comicdom Con Athens 2010

Posted in Oni Market, Umi & Sora with tags , , , , , on April 25, 2010 by speedxgrapher

I had wanted to do this much, much earlier, but I have been busting my ass with the reports from COMICDOM CON, all besides everything else I have to deal with in my everyday life (too much, too boring, too doesn’t-really-matter-to-anyone-but-me). However, I have managed to steal some time (from the great, eternal Repository of Time, evidently) and say a few words about Umi & Sora’s new fanzine, CHORISSU. First off, I would like to thank all the friends who came by over the three days to support us and everyone else who picked up our fanzine, totaling sales of over 100 copies (which, trust me, for a virtually unknown fanzine – which in addition is more article than comic-centric –  is not shabby at all).

As with all collective works, there were bound to be some mistakes and judgment errors which sadly, either do not do justice to all the people that contributed their artwork, or ended up slighting them.  For that I would like to apologize and attempt to make some feeble amends, if anything to at least give my conscience some peace.

So first-off, in the artwork credits, two artists have not been listed with their full names: Korinna Veropoulou (Tori) and Efrosyni Giannakaina. I can only say that we never meant for that to happen and it was just one of those mistakes that slipped through the cracks. Furthermore, it is my opinion that the format in which Korinna’s contribution was printed does not do it justice and therefore you can see it in its original, disturbed glory below.

Additionally, there is one of Efrosyni’s pieces which I felt would have been better as a full-pager and in color (the color part was obviously impossible) and so I would like you to see it as I saw it in front of me. Note that it is watercolored and not by Photoshop and you will probably notice it is a variation on Kuroshitsuji.

Finally, and this where it hurts the most because she is a dear friend, I feel that Elli “Asaph” Moka’s artwork has been grossly misrepresented and its inherent humor lost due to the miniaturization. Therefore, I am also posting it here in its original form with my sincerest apologies and regret.

Those things having been said, now go buy the damn fanzine. It will be soon made available through certain venues, which will be promptly announced.

Cheers,

Speedgrapher

April 2010 Events: Update #1

Posted in Events, Oni Market, Umi & Sora with tags , , , , , , on April 13, 2010 by speedxgrapher

I said I may have some more news for you this week and here they are:

Press Release

Umi & Sora have remained somewhat silent after the successful Cosplay & Maid Café at The Mall’s FNAC and this may have given the impression of an untimely retirement, an impression entirely false at that! On the contrary, after careful consideration, followed by many months of planning, we are proud to present our latest project!

CHORISSU #1

CHORISSU is a magazine focused on our well-loved modern Japanese culture, which covers a broad spectrum ranging from manga, anime and cosplay, to music and video games. The magazine has been composed by the entirety of the team, guaranteeing variety in subjects, opinions and writing styles. Furthermore, the magazine is illustrated with artwork from a number of young Greek artists, within and outside of the team.

Inside you will find reviews on manga, anime and bands, interviews and articles concerning the Greek as well as the Japanese version of modern visual culture and much, much more!

CHORISSU will be available over the three days of COMICDOM CON at the Hellenic-American Union (16th-18th of April – Massalias 22, Athens), at the fanzine area.

We hope to see you there!

Jya ne,

Umi & Sora

April 2010 Events

April will be an eventful month to be sure, with the coming week featuring two heavy-hitting returns. The first is, of course, the 5th annual COMICDOM CON ATHENS at the Hellenic-American Union (22, Massalias St., Athens), which will be taking place from Friday the 16th to Sunday the 18th of April, featuring a bazaar, fanzines, international guests, panels, workshops and much – oh, SO much – more. For the full schedule, events etc. you would do best to visit right here. It’s our very own celebration of geek fandom and no one should miss it!

Secondly (and perhaps a bit unfortunately, given the timing) Somnium in Tenebirs returns with her Sakura Syndrome project to Athens on the same Saturday the 17th at Da Sein (12, Solomou St., Athens), presenting Japan & Anime Party – CLJ Collaboration Vol. 2, which is a SuG release party at the same time. You know the drill, you know what to expect and the party starts at 21:00 as always (just remember there is a 3,5 euro entrance fee, beer included)…

Sakura Syndrome - CLJ Event Vol. 2

…and just a week later, on the 23rd, she hosts her event in Salonika, at CoFiX (11, Lori Margariti St.) for the northern branch of the extended otaku family. This is a Starwave Collaboration Event, presenting the new release of the electro-rock band, the fool. Starts at 21:00 with an entrance fee of 4 euros (drink included). You can read more about both events over here.

I may have some more news for you come next week, but that is all for now. I can already tell you that I will be at the convention during all three days and I will be kind of busy, but if you drop by, look around for the freak with the camera. I am sure you will recognize me.

Cheers,

Comicdom Con 2009: Moments #3

Posted in Events, Oni Market with tags , , on April 27, 2009 by speedxgrapher

Having posted Day 2 of the Comicdom Con at the relevant blog, it’s time I finish up the subject here as well, with another set of photos of familiar visitors from our bustling, Greek J-community. I know you are all waiting for the pictures from Akai Panda’s mega-cool Cosplay Party, but cut ol’ Speedy some slack: it’s only Monday and this is going to be a big one indeed! A first round of kudos to Camus, Glastenen and Namida, here as well, since the bulletin probably got lost pretty soon.

At any rate, back to our people attending Comicdom Con. Ikimashou!

Arriving at the Con, Day 2: first encounter, L(llie) at the Comicdom Press booth!

I think that is about it. If you go over to Comicdom.gr, you will probably see some more familiar faces here and there, as well as notice the complete absence of die-hard Spider-man fan, Ed Elric, who had proclaimed he would be at the Con 12 hours straight (not that I blame him, given where he was, mind you, but I just needed to jab him a bit – hehehe). He DID make an effort and finally came to the after-party though. As for me, the only thing I regret is missing Shiverspine’s big gig at TEXAS Club, although I am sure they did perfectly marvelous. All you have to wait for now, is the report on Akai Panda’s party (I will try and not take too long – boy scout’s honor!).

Till then, keep strong,

Comicdom Con 2009: Moments #2

Posted in Events, Oni Market with tags , , on April 24, 2009 by speedxgrapher

As we are gearing towards Akai Panda’s party, the day after tomorrow, I must get a few things posted before I stuff my camera full of cosplay again. You would think that ol’ Speedy was the only one, from our bustling community of Japanese culture afficionados, to attend Comicdom Con 2009. Well, nay! Over the two days I spent at the convention, many familiar, warm faces showed up, some even coming back from the northwest of Europe!  Just the first day, look what the bear dragged in:

First off, there was the whole group of Nikmer, Xander, Fle-chan, Raziel & Velvet Vortex, Niovi aaaaand... NickUnknown back from Scotland for the Easter!

Fle-chan and the long tortured Zauk (yes, that hair is YET another accident - no he did not suddenly turn Skinhead).

Sokail and the "oh-so-mysterious" shinobi. Or is it a cowled anarchist inside the Greek-AMERICAN Association?!! Aaaaa!

At the end of Day 1 of the Con, Asaph had a triple identity as Kira, Comicdom member AND artist! MPD anyone?

There will be a third post, with more guest appearances on Day 2 and even more wackiness than allowed by most international laws! Wait for it!

Cheerio,
